Gia Lai (VNA) – An exhibition featuring more than 2,000 archival documents, photographs and artefacts on the elections of deputies to the National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels opened in Gia Lai on February 3, offering the public a comprehensive look at Vietnam’s electoral history and democratic traditions.
Organised by the provincial Department of Home Affairs at the Historical Archives Centre, the exhibition traces major milestones from the first nationwide general election on January 6, 1946, through subsequent parliamentary elections, and links them to key moments in the country’s development. It also highlights the evolving role and contributions of the People’s Councils of the former Gia Lai and Binh Dinh provinces (now Gia Lai province after the merger) to supporting local governance and socio-economic growth.
The display not only documents the institutional development of the National Assembly but also reflects how elections have accompanied each stage of national renewal and reform. Alongside archival materials, visitors can view a selection of traditional craft items, cultural products and representative OCOP goods from Gia Lai, creating a link between political history and local cultural identity.
Local officials said the exhibition carries important political, historical and social significance, helping to promote democratic awareness and strengthen understanding of citizens’ rights and responsibilities ahead of the upcoming National Assembly and People’s Council elections for the 2026–2031 term. The documents and images provide a vivid account of how elections have been organised over time, from the landmark 1946 vote to the preparations now underway for the next electoral cycle.
By presenting authentic historical sources, it is expected to help visitors better appreciate the meaning of the ballot and the central role of the people in the country’s political life. It also serves as a platform for reflecting on the nation’s democratic journey while encouraging broad public participation in future elections.
According to organisers, the exhibition aims to create a positive and engaging atmosphere as Vietnam moves towards the next major electoral event, reinforcing the idea that elections are not only a civic duty but also a shared national celebration.
The exhibition, themed “Elections of deputies to the National Assembly and People’s Councils – a festival of the entire people,” will remain open to visitors until March 31./.
