Hanoi (VNA) – Opening the 10th session of the National Assembly in Hanoi on October 20, Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan asked lawmakers to devise effective measures and orientations to bolster sustainable socio-economic development.

Addressing the event, Chairwoman Ngan said the session will comprise online and plenary meetings, during which the legislature will review socio-economic performance and the State budget in 2020, decide on a socio-economic development plan and State budget estimates, and allocate the State budget for 2021.

Legislators are also due to look into the implementation of NA resolutions on socio-economic development plans, economic restructuring, national finance, and 2016-2020 public investment.

Several socio-economic targets were not met this year due to the impact of COVID-19, global economic crises, and flooding. The NA was therefore required to forecast the global socio-economic-political situation to improve people’s lives, maintain socio-political stability, firmly safeguard independence and territorial integrity, and enhance friendship with countries and international organisations.

The NA is also scheduled to adopt seven bills and three draft resolutions and provide opinions on three draft laws to better ensure human and citizen rights, meeting requirements for socio-economic development and global integration in the new era.

According to Ngan, the adoption of the revised Law on Residency and Law on Environmental Protection will guarantee the exercising of constitutional rights to freedom of residency.

The legislature will also approve a resolution on participating in UN peacekeeping missions, reflecting the Party and State’s long-term political determination in this regard.

Lawmakers will also convene Q&A sessions on the implementation of NA resolutions on thematic supervision, and consider reports on public feedback sent to the 10th session and the outcomes of the settlement of voters’ suggestions sent to the 9th session.

They will also offer opinions on draft documents for submission to the 13th National Party Congress, decide on the timing of elections of deputies to the 15th NA and People’s Councils for the 2021-2026 tenure, and discuss personnel tasks and other important issues.

According to the top legislator, Vietnam’s economic growth is estimated at more than 2 percent this year thanks to the Party’s sound leadership, drastic and flexible directions from the Government, and the efforts of the entire political system.

She also lauded the Government, ministries, agencies, local authorities, and the armed forces for recent and ongoing search and rescue efforts in the central region.

Later, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc presented a report on the implementation of socio-economic development plans for 2020 and for 2016-2020, and major tasks and goals for 2021-2025 socio-economic development.

President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Tran Thanh Man delivered a report collecting public opinions sent to the 10th session.

Head of the National Assembly Standing Committee’s Ombudsman Committee Duong Thanh Binh presented a report on the outcomes of overseeing the settlement of voters’ complaints sent to the ninth session./.
